Leading home retailer IKEA is continuing to set the trend across Ireland and the UK by becoming an inclusive retail scheme. IKEA, Dublin installed a Changing Places Toilet with all equipment supplied and installed by Disability Needs in July 2017. Changing Places recently reached 1,000 registered sites across the UK and whilst this is a superb achievement there is still a long way to go for Ireland and the UK to become an inclusive society. The demand for these types of facilities is continuing to grow at a rapid scale and with increasing pressure to make the facilities a legal necessity for public spaces.
Research shows that over three-quarters of people with disabilities have left a shop or business because of poor customer service or lack of disability awareness. (Business Disability Forum)
IKEA, Dublin was motivated to open a Changing Place’s facility to ensure all of their customer’s needs were catered for. To achieve the recommended space, IKEA combined the previous baby changing facilities and disabled toilet together to provide a ‘bigger and better’ facility for their customers.
Why should retail schemes, tourism hot spots or education institutes install a Changing Places Toilet?
Standard accessible toilets do not meet the needs of all people with a disability. People with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well people with other physical disabilities such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis often need extra equipment and space to allow them to use the toilets safely and comfortably. These needs are met by Changing Places toilets.
Throughout the process, Disability Needs provided specialist advice to both the contractor and facilities manager to ensure the correct equipment was not only included but was located in the correct position to meet the needs of the end user. Andrew Smyth, Changing Places Specialist from Disability Needs commented “ The combination of space, correct equipment and it’s position is key to the success of a Changing Places facility. We will be able to provide expert advice to help guide managers, architects and contractors through the entire process”
The new facility includes the following top of the range equipment; Adult-sized height adjustable wall-mounted changing bench, Height Adjustable Wash Hand Basin, Ceiling track hoist, Automatic Toilet with adequate room on either side, Privacy Screen, Support Rails, Non-Slip flooring.
